Mammogram: Been there Done that :)

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Well I couldn't wait to get home and tell you all about my first mammogram ...

First let me start by telling you I just moved back to Canada and I had to get my mammogram done at the Oshawa hospital in Ontario...

My sister told me where I could park for free and then just a short walk to the hospital and Mike and I even went there yesterday so I would know exactly where to go.....

Well I shot that plan to hell when I couldn't find the road the hospital was on and drove pass it and kept on driving.......

So once I knew I had passed it I parked put the address in my GPS and started to back track...

I found it this time but I had no time to walk anywhere so I went into the hospital parking which I heard if after a half hour you had to sign over your first born to get out :(....

So parked I now had to find someone to show me the way to the mammogram room and of course no one was at the information desk ....I finally found someone who walked me all over and back to where I started and woohoo I was there ....

At that point I was so nervous and you all can guess what happen next ....Yes here comes a full body hot flash ...Now remember no deodorant wearing to a mammogram test and also remember sometimes there is a higher level of odor when you’re a menopausal lunatic...

I was ready to cry but as luck would have it, I sat down to wait my turn by this wonderful sweet lady who told me she was 78 yrs old and she had been having this done for years and years ....

She talked to me and told me it was better to have this done then to even have to deal with breast cancer for even a day ....

I wanted to jump up and hug here for making me feel better but I was so scared my robe that I was grasping like it was a lifeline would fly open in the front and she would see that gravity sometimes is such a bugger :)

Anyways to make a long story shorter I was taken into the room by a very sweet lady who understood my nervousness and even told me she couldn't smell anything because of my lack of deodorant ....

Then I removed my gown and waited for my breast to be flattened and the pain to start ...So after I was put in a very uncomforable position and was told to not move , the next thing I heard was ok that one is done now for the other one ....It was one of the pleasant hospital experience I ever had .....By the time she did the side xrays I was a pro ....

She then told me not to worry if I got a call back because it was my first one and that sometimes happens ...She then told me I would get the results in the mail in a week or so and my doctor would also get them and with that I was on my way ......

Now for parking as luck would have it It cost me $4.50 because it was after all that only a half hour ….So all in all it was A ok ....Now I can start worrying about the colonscopy next week ......

“But is it such a bad thing to live like this for just a little while? Just for a few months of one's life, is it so awful to travel through time with no greater ambition than to find the next lovely meal? Or to learn how to speak a language for no higher purpose than that it pleases your ear to hear it? Or to nap in a garden, in a patch of sunlight, in the middle of the day, right next to your favourite fountain? And then to do it again the next day?”
